Slovenska ekipa DORA osvojila drugo mesto na Imagine Cup 2013

The Slovenian student team DORA won a second place in the finals of the world’s biggest student IT competition Imagine Cup in St. Petersburg. In the competition from all over the world, they competed in the category Innovation, in the most prestigious competitive category.

The team DORA (Doctors Operational Research Assistant), for the above-mentioned classification, won a cash prize of $10,000, which is evident from the publication on the official competition website and on the social network Twitter..

The team DORA members – Kristjan Košič, Sean Arzenšek, Andraž Leitgeb, Zedin Salkanović – come from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in Maribor, their solution DORA might help the healthcare institutions to increase efficiency and to optimize surgical operations.

This year finals, organised by the American technology giant Microsoft, took place in Russia’s St. Petersburg. According to data published in May, applied 86 teams from 69 countries, but the last number, according to the data available, was 87 student teams from 71 countries.

The two Slovenian teams-Beezinga and Dora participated in the group of the best teams from the beginning of the year of the competition. The team Beezinga was the winner of the Slovene selection of the Imagine Cup competition, already the 11. Circle of the world competition, the team DORA was the world’s finalist of the global online competition.

According to the information available on the website http://www.imaginecup.com, the team Beezinga wasn’t classified into the first three places. Microsoft Slovenia explained that the team Beezinga, with its system for analysis and early information feedback of the bee’s behaviour, recorded a large media and potential investor’s interest.

The winning projects were announced in the three categories – Innovation, Games and Global Citizenship, and in the three so-called challenges and eight special prize categories, which were made possible by sponsors of the competition. Through the whole time of the competition, Microsoft awarded the best students with the cash prices and other prizes in total value of more than one million dollars.

The Imagine Cup competition is organised by the leading software producer in the world, the American company Microsoft. The competition is a part of the Microsoft global initiatives YouthSpark with the aim to help young people realize their potential through strengthening opportunities for the education, employment and entrepreneurship.

Slovene selection of Imagine Cup 2013 was organised by Tovarna Podjemov, RC IKT from Kranj, the Technology Park Ljubljana and the Microsoft Innovation Center along with many non-governmental organizations and businesses.

World finals of the next year of the competition Imagine Cup 2014 will take place in Redmond, an American city where company Microsoft have got headquarters.Slovenska študentska ekipa DORA je v finalu največjega svetovnega študentskega računalniškega tekmovanja Imagine Cup v Sankt Peterburgu osvojila drugo mesto. S konkurenco z vsega sveta se je pomerila v kategoriji Inovacije, v najbolj prestižni tekmovalni kategoriji.

Ekipa DORA (Doctors Operational Research Assistant) je za omenjeno uvrstitev prejela denarno nagrado v višini 10.000 dolarjev, je razvidno iz objave na uradni strani tekmovanja in na spletnem družbenem omrežju Twitter.

Člani ekipe DORA – Kristjan Košič, Boštjan Arzenšek, Andraž Leitgeb, Zedin Salkanović – prihajajo z mariborske fakultete za elektrotehniko, računalništvo in informatiko, njihova rešitev DORA pa naj bi pomagala zdravstvenim ustanovam povečati učinkovitost in optimizirati operacijske posege.

Finale tekmovanja, ki poteka pod okriljem ameriškega tehnološkega velikana Microsoft, se je letos odvil v ruskem Sankt Peterburgu. Po maja objavljenih podatkih, naj bi se ga udeležilo 86 ekip iz 69 držav, a se je to število po končnih podatkih povzpelo na 87 študentskih ekip iz 71 držav.

Med najboljšimi sta prvič doslej sodelovali kar dve slovenski ekipi – Beezinga in DORA. Ekipa Beezinga je bila zmagovalka slovenskega izbora za sodelovanje na že 11. izvedbi tekmovanja Imagine Cup, ekipa DORA pa se je v svetovni finale uvrstila prek globalnega spletnega tekmovanja.

Ekipi Beezinga se sodeč po podatkih, dostopnih na spletni strani http://www.imaginecup.com, ni uspelo uvrstiti na stopničke. Po pojasnilih Microsofta Slovenija pa je ekipa Beezinga s svojim sistemom za analizo in zgodnje obveščanje o dogajanju v čebelnjakih zabeležila veliko zanimanje medijev in potencialnih investitorjev.

Zmagovalni projekti so bili razglašeni v treh kategorijah – Inovacije, Igre in Svetovno državljanstvo – ter tudi v treh tako imenovanih izzivih in osmih posebnih nagradnih kategorijah, ki so jih omogočili sponzorji tekmovanja. Skozi celoleten potek tekmovanja je Microsoft najboljšim študentkam in študentom podelil finančna sredstva in druge nagrade v skupni vrednosti več kot milijon dolarjev.

Tekmovanje Imagine Cup poteka pod okriljem vodilnega proizvajalca programske opreme na svetu, ameriške družbe Microsoft. Tekmovanje je del Microsoftove globalne pobude YouthSpark, s katero želi mladim prek krepitve priložnosti za izobraževanje, zaposlitev in podjetništvo pomagati uresničiti njihov potencial.

Slovenski izbor Imagine Cup 2013 organizirajo Tovarna podjemov, RC IKT iz Kranja, Tehnološki park Ljubljana in Microsoftov center za inovacije skupaj s številnimi nevladnimi organizacijami in podjetji.

Svetovni finale naslednje izvedbe tekmovanja, Imagine Cup 2014, se bo odvijal v ameriškem mestu Redmond, kjer ima sedež podjetje Microsoft.
